Troubled teens get second chance in new city setting
On a November night 17 years ago, Alvin Chaplin pored over a list of troubled youths. He chose a handful of teenage boys to live in a new group home in Stafford County. The home would be named for Chaplin, who dedicated the last two decades of his life to the teens he called “throwaway kids,” those headed for juvenile detention centers….

Film brings out caring side of Russell Crowe
So this is how you see the playful, tender side of Russell Crowe—seat him beside a child during a press conference. The actor who once had a reputation for brawls and having a small fuse showed his daddy side when he recently talked to us in New York with Ty Simpkins, who plays his son in “The Next Three Days.”

There are few cities in the United States that are as welcoming to horses and their owners as Dallas. The variety of boarding facilities, training opportunities, horse shows and rodeos all make Dallas one of the most horse-friendly places around.

One example of the excellence in Dallas is the Park Lane Equestrian Center. This is hard to believe, but part of the facility called the Park Lane Ranch includes over 18,000 square feet of climate-controlled riding space! There is just as much outdoors as well, but with that kind of opportunity available to you, you can ride all year long! Making sure that their space appeals to everyone in the family, the center also offers volleyball, softball, golf, a driving range and a petting zoo. Some of the other local boarding stables include Rocking M Stables, the Jo Labec Riding Stables and the White Rock Stables. If you delight in polo, the Dallas Polo Club hosts a variety of events every year.

There are also plenty of chances to buy horses as well. The Chappie Stout Horse Sales, Quality Thoroughbred, Caballistas Equine Solutions and Mesquite Horse Sale are just a few of the better known breeders. Other facilities that offer several annual shows include the Las Colinas Equestrian Center. The Dallas Hunter Jumper Show and the Dallas Harvest Horse Show are exceptional because all proceeds go to providing therapeutic riding to disabled children and adults in the community. Some of these organizations include Riding Unlimited and Equest.

Texas was Made for Rodeos

Believe it or not, there is a huge rodeo that happens just fifteen minutes outside of the downtown area. The Mesquite Rodeo has bull riding, calf roping and barrel racing. If you head over to Fort Worth you can attend the Cowtown Coliseum, which is home to the very first indoor rodeo. The nice thing about this rodeo is that they have one every week, which means that your family can regularly delight in the excitement of attending a rodeo. If you want to attend one of the largest rodeos in Texas, you can go to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. This event has hundreds of contestants and performers and really is something to see. This is such a large event that there is also a parade that goes to the downtown area of Fort Worth as well as other types of activities that are all meant to embrace the heritage of Texas.

Fort Worth is also home to plenty of boarding stables, such as the Cartwright Ranch and Stables, the Curragh Equestrian Center, the Rafter P Bar Ranch and Rodeo, the Eagle Mountain Equestrian Center, the M Terry Stables and the Silver Creak Ranch. In exceptional facilities like these, you can rest simple knowing that your horses are well cared for.

Be Around Others Who Share Your Interests

An fascinating way to getaway and experience the Texas wilderness is to visit one of the dude ranches in this area. This is a fantastic way to see history come to life. There is horseback riding in addition to other forms of entertainment. Some of the better-known dude ranches include the Austin Ranch, Beaumont Ranch, the Bill Bates Cowboy Ranch and Brentlinger Farm. Both Dallas and Fort Worth have stayed right to their equestrian heritage and have kept traditions like rodeos, ranches, stables and horse farms alive and well. The best was to see Texas is still on horseback.

What comes up for you when you hear the word “test”? I’ll never make it. I’m going to fail. I need to go to the nurse. These are typical responses we hear from students.

Over the years, young people develop certain attitudes about school. Their attitudes are made up not just of the actual experiences but also of everything they’ve thought about these experiences. Events they might have perceived as being unpleasant, like tests, get reinforced as negatives because they fall into the habit of thinking of them in negative terms.

The human brain listens to what it’s being told and forms itself accordingly. Every time we relive an unpleasant experience or reckon a negative thought, we’re strengthening the neural connections that lead to the “tests¨Care¨Cawful” conclusion. But what if a teen decides to replace that connection with a different one? One that says, “Tests are cool. I’m really into them. I like the challenge.”

When teens are exploring their attitudes about school, we tell them whenever somebody says the word “test” they can yell, “C’mon! Gimme that test!” It’s fun – and it also changes the way they reckon about tests. By transforming their attitudes from “oh no, not a test” to “bring it on!” they’re rewiring their brains to welcome academic challenges instead of fearing them. Instead of being the passive victims of tests, they own the whole testing experience!

One time a school superintendent was visiting one of our programs. She was talking to one of the facilitators and casually mentioned the word “test” in conversation. She jumped when a dozen campers standing nearby shouted in unison, “Gimme that test!”

The Ownership key is where we come from when we talk academics. It’s simple for young people to slip into a passive role: “The teacher teaches; I just sit here and absorb.” By the time they hit their teen years, a lot of kids have switched to autopilot in school. The stuff they’re learning is inert because they’re barely interacting with it.

But something exciting happens when people reclaim ownership of their education. They rediscover the fun and challenge of learning. They become the captains of their own experience instead of being benchwarmers. Now they can direct where their education goes – and how far.

Taking ownership of their education means no more excuses, never playing the blame game again: “She made me do it.” “He’s not a excellent teacher.” “My study partner’s not excellent at math.” “This school’s lame.” Ownership is about taking 100% responsibility for everything that we do and where we are in life. Period.

When young people take back the responsibility for their academic performance, their energy levels automatically go up. You can see pride of ownership in a person’s eyes and read it in their posture. Just taking ownership gets them more engaged, more enthusiastic, more awake and more alert.

Program grad David Evans told us how the Ownership key helped him revive a sagging GPA: “I really got how I could take command and harness my capabilities. The following school year I was sitting next to my friend in honors chemistry. We used to sit in class and we would spend most of the time cracking jokes and making fun of the teacher. I suddenly realized that my ancient behaviors wouldn’t fit into my new beliefs. I wanted to pay attention in class. I told my friend, and it really caught him off guard, but that didn’t stop me. From that moment on, there was no looking back for me.”

One of the signs campers read on our walls says, “I Am Responsible for What I Make.” Once they realize they’re in charge, they’re on their way to greatness. When they couple ownership with a can-do attitude and some nuts-and-bolts learning skills, they’re an unstoppable express train to success!

SuperCamp is held at eight gorgeous colleges across the U.S. throughout the summer. Quantum U takes place at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
