My son is turning 1 next month — I’d like to buy him a kid-sized table and chairs either for his birthday or Xmas, but am not sure at what age he’ll be able to use it. He is crawling, pulling up, nearly walking, and starting to climb stairs. Thanks!

My boys started at around 15 months. By 18 months they were very excellent at it (no falling, etc).

when my son turned 1 they went him to the next class in daycare. they had toddler sized tables and chairs and taught him to sit and eat.. by the end of his first week he had master sitting and would sit on anything and everything.. it was so cute.. so your son should certainly be ready.

I reckon by xmas he will for sure be able to sit at one. If he can sit balanced really well and not wobble around then I reckon its fine to go ahead and get him. If you are not sure about his birthday then for sure xmas.

Even if he doesn’t sit at it – he will likely just like to have his own table to place toys on. My son is one in a few days, and we’ve had a table and chairs set out for him for about a month or two. He likes them! He doesn’t sit in the chairs but he pushes them around, puts things on them, and the table I like to place different toys (puzzles, books, blocks) on each day. He crawls under it, and hides under it – it was the first thing he walked from on his own too. He likes having it around!

I say buy it and even if he doesn’t use it straight away – he will certainly get use out of it!

My daughter was about that age when we did away with the high chair and replaced it with a child-sized table/ chair.

You may have to help him into and out of the chair for awhile, but he will like that it is just his size. : )

When I first took my son to daycare, he was barely 11 months ancient. He was still in high high chair at home – imagine my surprise when they had him sitting in a small chair at a table for snacktime. Not only that, they got their own chairs and bellied up to the table on their own once they were walking (even though it took them a while to drag their chair over and get on it).

The small answer is buy it for his birthday – he’ll like it!!
